Fake UGC is an SEO tactic that this directory refuses

Why we ban fake reviews, how schema stays honest, and the friction signup that keeps UGC pending.

User-generated reviews became a search engine optimization tactic: hundreds of five-star blurbs, no bylines, no purchase proof, dates clustered around a launch week. Google's spam policies and 2026 quality systems treat that pattern as a trust problem. We treat it as an ethics problem first. Build Something People Want does not present fake UGC as authentic, and the schema on our pages is built so we cannot "accidentally" emit a user-count AggregateRating.

What we ship instead

Editorial reviews, labeled as editorial, with a named staff author. Optional public_quote rows that require a source URL. Real user and agent reviews only after a two-step signup that matches the profiles table, plus admin approval. Pending is the default. is_admin cannot be self-set.

That friction is the product. Directories die when anyone can post "Great app, 5 stars" from a newly created inbox. Our /signup form asks what you ship in 400 or more characters and why you belong in 280 or more. That is not growth hacking. That is a bouncer.

Schema without lying

JSON-LD on product pages may include AggregateRating only for staff editorial composites, with reviewCount equal to those editorial reviews. We convert a 0–100 Twin Score to a 5-point scale in the payload and we say so in the description field. We never attach a fabricated user rating. Review nodes point at Person authors with credentials pages.

If a rich-result parser wants 10,000 ratings, it can go to a store we do not control. This magazine will not mint them.

Why affiliate roundups fail agents

A listicle titled "Best AI tools 2026" that ranks ChatGPT, a design canvas, and a vector database in one table is not a comparison. Agents who trust that table will call the wrong primitive. Twin Pages exist so ChatGPT and OpenAI Platform remain different URLs, and so Midjourney is not awarded an API it does not have.

The original research table in our journal is the alternative: category means, gap lists, and a CSV. That is GEO and AEO as publishing, not as prompt injection.

The 2026 policy backdrop

Google retired FAQ rich results for all sites in May 2026. Spam updates in June and August 2026 targeted citation manipulation aimed at AI answers. Our editorial policy forbids buying citations and forbids recommendation-poisoning listicles. Genuine participation — this catalog, this rubric, this dataset — is allowed because the purpose is the work, not the manipulation.

What we still want from the open web

Named authors. Dates. First-hand use. Public methodology. Internal links that are not orphans. Answer-first openings of 40 to 60 words. H1 then H2 then H3 in the HTML, not a client-only render. Markdown on Accept. Robots.txt that does not blanket-ban GPTBot and friends. That is the is-agentic baseline, and it is also just a decent newspaper.

Practical checklist for other publishers

If you run a catalog, label every review kind. Require a source URL for quotes. Keep UGC behind identity and moderation. Do not emit AggregateRating for numbers you did not collect. Publish a rubric. Put the founder on an /authors page. When you use a model to draft, keep a human on the byline who will answer email.

We will be judged on whether the CSV matches the pages. That is a higher bar than a testimonial widget, and it is the bar we chose.
